I have a very formal name. I was named after my grandmother who went be a nickname. I named my daughter my grandmothers nickname and gave her my spouses middle name, which unisex. She is a teen and I still love that we did this. Our boys also all have family names but not ours.

+1 And yes, I feel the same way about a son taking his dad’s name.

Up until my parents had and named me, there were long running traditions of giving daughters their mother’s name as a middle name. All of them, not just the first born, so Jane’s daughters were Caroline Jane, Lisa Jane, and Margaret Jane. I kind of wish my parents had continued those traditions.

I wouldn’t think this is weird. My mom, me and my kid all have the same first initial and me and my DD have the same middle name.

Pretty much every girl and woman in my family has a name that is "Mary" or a form of Mary: Marie, Maureen, Moira, Maev, Maria, etc.

Do you find it obnoxious when boys have their dad's name as middle name?

DD has my first name as her middle name and I’ve never gone by a nickname. I love it!

It’s a very done thing. Don’t use the same nickname maybe but I think it’s lovely.

A friend shares her double first name with her mom, grand mom, and great grand mother. But, she has 4 boys so the tradition will end.
