The. North Pole. Get over it. They come out and die fairly quickly. The world does not revolve around you. They aren't nearly as annoying as crying, whining child.

I was the Fairfax commenter earlier who said "this is no big deal" and I take it back!! Cicadas are definitely disruptive now. We tried to bike last weekend and had to turn around from the number of cicadas in the face. I took a picnic blanket to a baseball field and we had to pack up and leave because it was just so unpleasant to dodge the cicadas. Even the pool doesn't keep them away! Ack! Enough already!

I am wondering about Bulters...not many trees around. I do not hate cicadas but do not want them crawling on me while I pick.

Neither have my folks who live near that area. They live on a big flat field, which may be part of it.

Why are the cicadas so bothersome?

I have awesome memories playing with them as a kid with my cousins. They don't bite and are fascinating.

We went to Palisade's spray park last week and it was fine, but I can imagine it will be unbearable next weekend. We live in North Arlington and every day the number of cicadas we see on our driveway TRIPLES! By the weekend they will cover everything. Yuck!

There is an app.

Many school kids are using it.

Prince William County isn’t expected to get cicadas this year - they mostly have the brood that came out in I think 2013 or 2014.

I live in Fairfax, near woods, and yes, they are around, but it doesn't prevent us from enjoying being out doors.

Also if you go to playgrounds or soccer fields or other places where kids like to play, you should be fine.

I don't think we're at the "avoid outdoors" stage of this.

I would guess more urban areas, like DC (maybe not the Mall).

Embrace them, don't avoid them.

I went through an emergence as a kid and honestly it is the most amazing natural wonder I've ever seen.
