In the 80s, Amherst got so irritated with the fraternities bad behavior and opposition to allowing in female students that they banned fraternities, took back all the houses into college property. There are a few that remain underground and off campus but they successfully broke the system. I think one of the Animal House writers went to Amherst (and another to Dartmouth).

Agree 100%. I went to Bucknell in the early 90's on a full scholarship. They actively recruit from inner cities and minorities. I truly feel like they try to do the right thing, but the students are total jerks. Administration still needs the support of alum so they often are caught between a rock and hard place. It is TOTALLY unacceptable frat boy behavior which seems to never stop.

We are full pay with a high stat student with excellent ECs. Removed schools that have a prominent "Greek life" culture from out list of colleges. We are sure that our kid can find happy and productive people to socialize with without the crutch of a frat. There is nothing to recommend about greek life. I feel these work for emotionally and socially stunted sheeples.

Truly the worst college environment in the Northeast, and one of the worst in the country. This place should lose its tax exempt status as no longer serving an educational or charitable purpose.

“Greek life” is stupid and adds nothing to any of these colleges. Fraternities are such garbage.

+1, though more generally. I went to a SLAC that is similar in a lot of ways to Bucknell - size, campus, dominant greek live. I loved it, wouldn't trade it for anything, and I met most of my best friends there. There is no way on earth I'll let my daughter go there. Lucking, her interests lie elsewhere.

Disgusting. I am SO glad my DD turned down Bucknell. I confess I didn't know much about the school and it seemed to fit the bill on her major, location and size. She applied but was never enthusiastic. Eventually she just came out and said that based on reputation, she'd never be comfortable there - frat boys, tons of drinking, and an unsafe vibe (that she could never quite put her finger on). i think this grotesque incident describes it all. Glad she has good instincts.

Bucknell frat boys = Spoiled rich kids with a lot of down time.
