There seems to be no consensus on how much to tip for grocery delivery. This is a perfect illustration of why we need to do away with tipping culture and just pay everyone a fair consistent wage.

We were tipping a lot during the pandemic, but started to do our own shopping again. When we still do order, we tip about 10% on the larger orders, with a $10 minimum on the smaller ones

Most people don't have $200-300 orders. My last order was $100 and I tipped $5.

OP here - not instacart, Giant Delivers (formerly known as Peapod). I have not noticed any markup, and between the ease of meal planning based on sales, more store brand options, and being able to easily stay under budget (whereas at the store, you never really know your total until you get through checkout!) I find it’s actually easier to stay on a budget with delivery. Although not if I’m tipping $50!!

IME if you pickup the items using curbside the prices are the same as in the store with only like a $3 surcharge and there is no tipping.

Just so you guys know, instacart only pays the shopper/delivery person “on average” $7 per order. So if you have an order that takes an hour to shop (say at least 35-40 items) instacart only pays that shopper $7 to shop and deliver your order.

I haven’t found this. For me the more I use Instacart the cheaper it gets.

If you are a picky and particular customer and you have a full service shopper you should be tipping 20 to 30 percent. It’s a ton of work to do full service shopping and delivery.

I do $15-$20 per order. I don’t think it makes sense to tip as a percentage of the order.

We always do Amazon Fresh and tip whatever they set the default amount to. For us it's usually $10 and smaller orders are $7.

Given this information I think your proposal is reasonable, but I also agree with the PP who said the easiest way to save is to go in store. We have been doing drive by pick up groceries most of the pandemic. We just shifted back to in store now that we are both fully vaccinated. The difference in cost was $30 (we plan our list in an app that allows us to see in store vs pick up prices). That’s $1500/year. We could afford it as a way to stay safe last year given our risk profile. Now, though, that’s a poor use of our resources.

OP here - they are NOT shopping for us. This is just the delivery truck driver. The truck is fully packed and loaded already.

We do a flat 5 dollars per delivery. Usually we order Amazon Fresh, so our delivery person is not doing the shopping (they pick it up at a warehouse).

I also however prefer Fresh Direct, which emphasizes that tipping is optional and employees are paid well with benefits, for precisely this reason.
