Rock quarries are dangerous Gramps. You have no idea what is underneath, large logs, debris, etc.
OP- my kids play travel sports and so the hotels often have pools. Parents take turns supervising/making sure the kids are being jerks to other families.

No, they other parents are neglectful and they allow it because they know you are there supervising their kids. I would never let my child or anyone swim alone as the risk of drowning is very high.
However, I do think its wrong to be in a hotel/pool during covid especially with kids.

That's what I would be more concerned with. Teenage boys rough house and can be loud and honestly obnoxious to other adults. I am sure they would be better behaved with you there.
Yes, with 8 boys, I’d be worried about chicken and other dumb games.

You are not. I wouldn't let them go alone younger than 16 and even then it would depend on the group. Some things are based on individuals vs age. But I'd go for 15 and younger no matter what.

Too much potential for creepers. I am not sure hotel pools are well maintained or watched by staff either. Remember news stories about kids getting suctioned into pool drains? I probably would hang around reading my book. My presence is for emergencies.

This. Totally depends on the age. I’m less worried about drowning than them being boorish a-holes yelling and disrupting other guests. 13 year olds, yes. 16 year olds? Of course not!

I would be a little nervous but at some point you have to let kids be kids. My kids are young 3,5 so no chance they are hanging at the pool by themselves but by 10-12 I am totally cool with him and her doing their thing at the hotel pool alone.
You have preschoolers and you think you know what you would do if they were 10-12? Lol.

Weird to leave them alone in a hotel pool. It's not like at home where the parents would be nearby or at least within earshot.
