Totally fine. My boss’s name is Elizabeth. She goes by Christy. It’s a non-issue.

The child can go by her nickname or formal name when she wants to. The family will probably always call her by her nickname.

Agreed. And I say this as someone who recently lost a parent, so I empathize with your husband, but perhaps some therapy is needed. I mean it's very possible your daughter could look like her grandmother, what is he going to do to avoid interacting with her because it might make him too sad? This is the sucky part of losing a parent before they get to meet your kids but he can't spend the rest of his life avoiding reminders of his mom because it might make him sad. It's not healthy for him, and it's not even healthy for your daughter.

Hey honey, your name Is Barbara, but you have to be called Katie because Barbara makes your dad sad because it was his mom's name, and no it doesn't matter if you prefer to be called Barbara at some point.

Not always upper class, but it's never been a problem for people I know.

Stephanie, called Pepper. Robert, called Pete. Etc. Most people never even knew their given names, & it's as easily corrected as "Call me Kat, not Kathy, please."

This is the correct answer. Ultimately it's your daughter's name and what she decides she wants to be called is the only vote that matters, so maybe go back to the drawing board.

One of my daughters goes by a sort-of unrelated nickname, and it's never been an issue. She's in her 20s right now and has never had problems. She just tells everyone, "I go by by Cricket."

I’ve Always gone by an unrelated nickname, OP. I’ve always loved it! It separates who knows you well and who doesn’t.

Elizabeth: Isabel or Eliza
Mary: Maria or Mia
Nancy: Anna or Annabel

That’s not a huge hardship. I’m an Elizabeth who goes by Beth. You tell them once and they get it.
