This happened to my kid too and I took him to a podiatrist. Turn out he's flat-footed, he wears orthotics now and it completely fixed his foot pain.

Why are you spending time arguing with me on the definition of “tween”? Do you really need to know he’s just about to turn 11? Does that make you feel better? Move on and find something else to complain about. Do you honestly care that much to spend time writing out your unhappiness with my choice of forums?
Also, pp should look up what “tween” means before lecturing others.

My 11 year old had heel pain that was diagnosed by 2 different pediatricians as Sever's Disease and told she would outgrow it in 3-6 months. 6 months later and still experiencing pain, we took her to an orthopedist who found a stress fracture in her heel and she had to wear a boot for 3 months. Talk about feeling like a sh*tty parent...

Sever's disease is common at that age. For DD she had to stop activities for a bit to reduce the inflamation then regular stretches to avoid it.
Sole are often suggested (very lucrative) but randomized trial show little effectiveness.

My son had this when he was 10. Mostly only complained when wearing his baseball cleats...
Someone said to buy new balance cleats with some sort of inserts (can’t remember details- DH handled)
Solved the problem, never heard him complain about it again after that.
Common, apparently. Some other sports parents sympathized and said their sons had had the same issue, and gave the tip about the cleats/inserts..

Sounds like Sever’s Disease, as others have said. Very common in growing kids. Podiatrist said it’s because the Achilles’ tendon is too tight and is pulling the growth plates apart and not letting them move together. Will continue until their growth plates fuse, around 15 or 16.

this happened to my DS at about 10. He complained about it off and on for a year. I finally took him to see an orthopedist. He was an older man, and as soon as DS told him his symptons the Dr said, "I think I know what it is, but we'll take an xray just to be sure".
He looked at the xray and said, "Yep, just as I thought.. it's growing pains. All my kids had the same thing".
The bones on his feet were growing, and for some kids, it can cause pain. DH said when he hit puberty and really started to shoot up, he had a lot of pain in his feet and legs. He would rotate his feet in bed to find relief in his ankles and feet. To this day in bed, he rotates his feet out of habit.
Get your kid to an ortho to confirm this, though. Obviously, no one knows on here for sure.
BTW, the doc also said my DS was about a year to year and half behind on bone growth. He is on the shorter side for his age and is hitting puberty late.

FYI - our son had the same problem last year at 10.5. our ped told us that the heel is one of the first parts on the body to reach adult hood.
Look at sever's disease. He probably needs rest, and new soft shoes. And it'll go away in a few weeks

Thanks for posting this, OP. My 13 yo has been having similar issues, so I did some research on Sever’s and think that’s what’s going on. Gel heel inserts are recommended, so I just bought some.
And while this specific discussion probably belongs in the health and medicine forum, tweens are 9-12, so this parent of two teenagers is fine having 10 yos discussed in the teens and tweens forum. This post was clearly labeled as being about a 10 yo, so it’s very easy to pass on by if it’s not relevant.
