Subject: what used care ($20k or so) is cool for teens?
For $20k you can buy 2 cars!!
In 2019 we bought a used Volvo wagon w/16k miles for $22k. This was for DH and me, not our teens! Our teens are driving old cars (15 years old), but you could just get a 5 or 7 year old car and it will be just fine! Non-luxury cars will have lower future maintenance costs, so stick with those.

How about a 2015 Mustang or Dodge Charger or Camero. You should be able to find one under 20k with less than 50,000 miles.

My daughter will turn 16 in September. Won't be getting her a POS -- I want something safe, and I don't want to get a call at 10:30pm to retrieve my kid from the side of the interstate or high school parking lot cuz their car broke down/wouldn't start. But "cool" DEFINITELY is not factoring into my decision either. It'll probably be an Accord or Camry or something along those lines, a few years old.

Kids love Jeeps. That said, look at Honda CRV or Ford Escape for great value.

I just bought the latest Consumer Reports used car guide, and there's a section devoted to best cars for teens, with recommended make/model/years for safety. It says not to get them SUVs (harder to handle, slower to brake), but then they do include some SUVs on the list (Highlander being one of them).
Me, I'd probably do a Corolla or Prius (with brake assist), neither or which are particularly cool. I'd let them pick between the two and name the color, if I was feeling generous. You probably want them to like it enough to take care of it.
