There are so many factors that go into this. You can get away with a lot more styles if your home is post-1950.

Have you looked into wooden window repair? If you have good windows in a historic district, they should not need to be replaced.

OP here, I don't think I want to spend the money for wood. We have wood now, and our house is 25 years old. I guess over time they have expanded are all stuck, the springs cause them to open up unexpectedly. I don't want to spend $$$ though. I don't think when you have window treatments it will matter. Someone here can try to talk me out of it. I assumed that meant vinyl, but looks like I have some research to do on the diff. types. I don't live in a super old home, FWIW, only 25 yo
Vinyl will have an even shorter lifespan.

I agree....we went with vinyl because I hated our old wood windows. I could not open or close most of them myself; I was constantly having to have my husband do it. Our new vinyl windows glide effortlessly--I couldn't be happier. We replaced about 23 windows and two sliding doors, for about $18K.
