This happened to my brother - a relatively new Pyrex dish exploded shortly after he got it. After this happened, he said he spoke to some other people that had similar things happen and discovered some manufacturing had been moved to China. Not sure if all manufacturing had moved or the composition changed for every piece.

It took me hours to clean the mess out of my oven. It happens.

This is crazy to me—I grew up with Pyrex from the 70s and never heard of this. I thought the whole thing with Pyrex was you could put it in the microwave etc. we use it when making simple syrup all the time. Now I’m nervous!

DS was once horsing around with a broom and kicked the glass door on a hutch and it shattered, it was tempered glass. I have to admit it was spectacular.

What's bad when it breaks is corelle. Long wicked pieces. If I needed a weapon in a hurry I'd break a corelle soup plate.

I agree there was probably a tiny flaw and whether it was temp change or something else it was going to happen. My mom did a fair amount of canning and always made a point about never putting a metal spoon inside a mason jar, to avoid damage that would eventually cause the jar to break.

My round Pyrex (well, probably an off-brand) cracked about a week ago. DH claims he didn’t do it, but it wasn’t cracked when I last used it. Apparently baking in metal is usually better anyway, so will transition towards metal as I gradually replace things.

I agree it could have been very bad.....luckily it shattered into what looked like tempered glass. All of the pieces very tiny and rounded on edges. No one was hurt at all.

I’m the PP whose Pyrex exploded after being on the stovetop. It flew 6 feet. I had scrapes on my arms and thank goodness my daughter wasn’t in the kitchen because she was just the right height (countertop) that it could have gone in her eyes. Surprising they are still on the market given the random exploding possibilities...
