It’s definitely better than before, but that doesn’t mean we should settle for this dysfunctional set-up either. School boards can be much better than DC’s prior incarnation, and better than what we have now.

But it won't be here in DC. Look how corrupt and incompetent our city council and State Board of Education reps are.

One thing I wish DC would do is set up some outdoor classrooms. Can principals do this or would it be controlled / prevented by DCPS central?

Our principal said no outdoor classrooms because we might have a Code Red day and then what would we do? Yes, you read that right.

Uggg. A science teacher friend asked to host labs outside after school hours and was told no because PETA might find out and protest.🙄

My HS student will have 0 in person instruction this year. We tried the CARES classroom to get some peer engagement and it was a fail. My middle school student starts back 1 morning a week this week - so if everything works out she will have 8 mornings in the building this year (1 class per day being taught simulcast)

Dcps really shining here! DEAL FOR ALL!!!!!

Nope. My classroom is empty the other days. It makes me so angry.

I don’t know about you but my principal has done a great job.
And all the principals fear for their jobs if they don’t follow what DCPS Central says exactly.
Ferebee fired the Walls principal for trying to do a good job by teachers and students during COVID.

My principal has not. I’ve asked several times to be able to come in more (bringing back my cohort of kids multiple days per week) and been told no.

You’d have better luck if parents all emailed the mayor and council members the same questions.

I would be more in favor of mayoral control if the mayors stopped picking charter schools hacks to run DCPS. Can’t we have someone who is a supporter of traditional public schools running our school system?

It’s better with mayoral control.
But it would be even better with a single elected chancellor.

Or if the council would keep the mayor from appointing hack charter-trained education bureaucrats as chancellor. It’s depressing.

Allen reversed course as soon as it was clear parents were heavily pro-reopening. Both of his kids have been back in person since the beginning of T3, so he definitely wasn’t personally opposed.
