I’m white and live in NW. I could get over the location part. I would be interested in my daughter going, but I’m not sure she would see the benefits at her age. I guess the question is do you force a high schooler because it would be a great experience if they didn’t want to leave their friends??

Except it's true. The other "information" being offered are just excuses. A previous poster mentioned the school's SAT scores not being that great, for example -- apparently oblivious to the fact that there's a high correlation between household income and SAT scores, and Banneker isn't exactly a rich kid school.

We all know why DCUM parents shun Banneker.

My opinion? It's not a top choice here because Banneker is 2% White. Folks aren't willing to have their child be an "only".


People will come up with all kinds of elaborate excuses but it's just that. It's a great school.I think there's an actual percentage of white kids for most white families to feel comfortable sending their kids.

What is interesting is that back in the late 90's School without Walls was majority black my husband was one of the 3 white students who graduated in his class

I have a 4th grader in a "HRCS". His biggest hope is to attend Banneker. He loves math and science, tolerates anything that adds the A to "STEAM"

First of all this is the OP and at that a native Black Washingtonian who just recently moved back. I am not stirring any pots. I am new to the forum
so my question is valid and I had not read any other posts on the school. I have so many friends who have graduated from this school and attended top universities. I am
wondering why it’s not a sought after option for parents as I do have a child who will be entered high school in no time. I only see constant posts about Wilson so that is why I was asking.


DCUM has many trolls who seem to be trying to get White and Black parents to argue with one another. (To me, it seems like this is motivated politically somehow — as if conservatives want to see mostly-Democratic DC fight and try to stir the pot.)

There’s tons of discussion about Banneker here and a good thread in the last month or so. The DCUM search feature is decent (but you may wish to select “most recent” when you search. You can also use Google to search DCUM. Good luck!

Personally I’m not concerned about my child getting accepted to college. I want her to have opportunities to go to an elite college if that’s what she wants to do. I look more closely at which colleges the high school graduates are accepted to than whether they are accepted


Are there stats on where various local high school graduates go to college?

Personally I’m not concerned about my child getting accepted to college. I want her to have opportunities to go to an elite college if that’s what she wants to do. I look more closely at which colleges the high school graduates are accepted to than whether they are accepted
