Other parents have expressed concern to me about it, including of the your kid will get kidnapped/I should call the cops on you variety. Norms on this stuff have changed enormously since I was a kid. Thank you for being the sole voice of reason. That’s hard but it is the only way sanity can return to modern parenting.


NP- I grew up in DC. No way would I let my six year old wander around on the street alone.


NP - I also grew up in DC. I think "wandering around" is different than walking around your own block. DC (and cities in general) vary so much from block to block that it truly depends on where you are located. Ours is a cul-de-sac with neighbors of all generations who look out for each other, so I don't think this idea is necessarily crazy just because it's DC.

I would love to let my seven year old ride his bike round our neighborhood but I worry about distracted drivers even on our relatively quiet streets.

5. But mostly because we don't have kitchen/living windows into back yard, there is a patio high up without a fence that she could walk off and fall pretty far (or jump for fun). We also live on a busier street so she probably wont walk off but if she did it could be very dangerous.

Age 3. At age 4 he could play in the front yard unattended. At age 5 he can walk up and down the street unattended.

But all of this depends on your neighborhood and your child.

Same here. My 6 year old rides his bike all the time with his little friends. We all keep an eye out for each other’s kids.

Haha!

Starting at 18 months I let my toddler play on the deck when I didn’t want to be out in the heat. I’d be on the other side of the sliding glass doors in the AC and she’d be happily playing with her water table outside. By age 2 she had free reign of our fenced back yard.

I let my kid out alone in our fenced backyard at 3.5. I did check on him fairly often from the window. The gate sticks really badly, I have a hard time opening it, let alone a little kid!
