If you want to be in the South, they are likely to look on Tulane more favorably.

This. And I graduated from one and lived in the city of the other.

My DC knows 7 kids going to Tulane next fall. They are all smart and outgoing.

This is the right answer. And I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. Just that “prestige” only makes a difference wrt a handful of schools (and then only in certain contexts). Beyond that, name recognition is about networks. Is a school known in a particular area or for a particular program/field? DC should go where s/he can get the education s/he wants in an environment that seems likely to be congenial. Could also look at where recent grads end up (geographically, occupationally, grad schools).

Questions like this demonstrate to me why the stupid US News rankings are so insidious. They are both outstanding schools, where anyone could have a great time from age 18-22 while also learning a lot.

But they are two very different cultures and settings. While both in a city, Tulane has a defined campus and is much more traditional and southern. BU puts kids in the heart of great city, with a student's experience feeling more like living as a resident of Boston than a campus resident. And it's far more international.

Deciding which of those environments will enable a young adult to thrive is so much more important than a couple of spots on a stupid website list, or a perceived level of "prestige"

Tulane is not filled with southern kids. It's mostly well-off kids from the northeast/mid-Atlantic regions. It's a great place to go for school. Boston University does not have as much of a campus feel, plus the winters are brutal.
