To answer what was apparently your actual question, prolactin prevents menstruation. Exactly how your body reacts to prolactin varies person to person so everyone gets their period back at different times, although breastfeeding increases the chance it will take longer. Apparently, "the timeframe for normalizing periods is anywhere from six months to two years."

Yup and you can get pregnant while breastfeeding

1. Breastfeed
2. Stop breastfeeding completely
3. Get your period?

How long was the time between step 2 and 3?

A period means return to fertility. That's what getting your period means.

If you have weaned and your period is not back something is up unless you are only a few months post partum.

Take a pregnancy test. You can drop an egg before you have a period.

Most women get their period back when there are stretches of time between feeds (e.g. sleep training) and/or starting solids. The average is 6mo.

The weaning question is confusing because we don't know if you mean wean onto cow's milk (12 months) or wean onto formula (possibly days post partum in which case no period would be normal).

My period returned a month after postpartum bleeding and then continued every month as usual, even though I was exclusively breastfeeding, so...

People are telling you about situations where it returned before they weaned in case you were unaware how common this is.

Ok but how does knowing how common it is helpful to me? I weaned. Someone who got their period and then weaned has no bearing on my situation.

I nursed both my kids until they were 3.5 years. For both kids, my period returned around 13 months PP.

Actually I suspect for many people, their period returns before the baby is fully weaned.

At 8 weeks postpartum and I EBF until a year with one and then year + naps/bedtime until 25 months with the other.

It always came back when baby started having long stretches between feeds. Say, 6 or 7 hours through the night. Way before I ever weaned. I EBF.

First child - one month after weaning
Second child - two weeks prior to last time breastfeeding

Once I got down to 3 pumps a day my period came back (8 months PP both times). Sorry to be another person not exactly fitting what you’re looking for.
