Subject: How often do you allow your teen to get their nails done? Do you allow Gel/tips? Highlight hair?
I don't do manicures and pedicures so I'd only pay for a special occasion. Hair, if she takes care of it, a good cut and I'd allow some color, no bleaching, but beyond that if its not crazy expensive, why not?

My teen gets high lights as needed. Mani/pedi once a week with me. We also go together for bikini waxes.

Perhaps it has to do with all the chemicals we’re surrounded by. It’s best for growing bodies, who are more susceptible to toxins, to avoid such non-essential things like nail salons and permanent hair dye.

My thirteen year old asked for gel nails over spring break. Since we didn’t go anywhere I allowed her to get it but I told her a) I don’t like gel / Uv light for a young girl never mind getting regular nail polish manicures., b) She is free to do her own nails at home. Up until now I only allowed her a manicure for her birthday, Christmas time, a special treat when her friend from California visits her. In the past, it has never been a big issue. C) if she wants to continue to get her nails done she has to come up with the money herself. She’s upset because I won’t allow her to go to a salon on a regular basis and that I won’t pay for any of it with exception to Xmas, birthday, and when her California friend visits.
I pay for haircut at a very ice salon but no hair coloring or highlights. Am I being mean? She’ll be 14 this summer. What do you do in your family? Do you slow gel? Do you pay for it? Am so being over the top by saying no highlights until she’s sixteen and has her own money to do it?
Not much, lately. But I don't get my nails done regularly, either. However, in "normal" times we went every couple months and she would come with me.
Regarding hair, she goes to a nice salon. She has a LOT of hair and a good haircut is worth the money. I'd also let her get a color or highlights if she wanted (she's about to turn 14). If we didn't have the good fortune to afford those things, maybe we'd find some other middle ground. But I can and she's a good kid. And she appreciates things. What's the money we make if you can't splurge on some small things? At least that's my feeling.

I have four girls. They can polish their nails at home. When they get their first period, I take them to get a pedicure or manicure; their choice. Bleeding can feel messy and scary and it's nice to do something small to pamper yourself. But I will not have them thinking that they need to pay for a professional manicure or pedicure in order to be in public or be presentable. When my oldest DD got her first paycheck at her first job, she asked if she could take her sisters out for pedicures and they all went together without me, which I thought was really sweet.
Nobody is allowed to get fake nails of any kind - gel or otherwise. No highlights. Once they're a senior in high school if they want highlights they can pay for them.

I would take my 13 yr old to get a professional eyebrow shaping and laser hair removal (if needed to upper lip or another conspicuous area). I would not want my 13 yo messing around with DIY for those. Eyebrows don’t grow back- ask me how I know. Never give a 13 yo tweezers!

I know a 12 year old who has her hair dyed regularly, and her eyebrows have been done.

I think 13 is a bit young for all of that, and this is coming from someone who got their acrylic nails done every two weeks junior and senior year in high school. I paid for them myself, though.
I think anything that is regular maintenance you should pay for - like hair cuts. Offer to purchase the tools (including some polishes) she needs to do her own manicures. For the price of two manicures, you can get all of the tools she needs plus a few polishes. I like Zoya for non-toxic polish, but there are definitely other options out there.
I would let her Manic Panic (or whatever) herself into oblivion. It's easy, semi-permanent, they have some cool colors, and you don't need to lighten your hair. I wouldn't start the highlight game at 13.

My daughter (13) is always desperate for gel nails, I say no. I get basic manicure for her about 3-4x a year?
Her friend has acrylics. I don’t know how much those cost to do or maintain, but they are really long!

No highlights at all.
They can dye their hair at home any color they want. It grows out and not a battle to fight in my mind. As long as school is a top priority for them.
Nails, I would let them if they used their own money, but I did explain this is expensive etc... No fake nails. Gel not til over 18.

Daughter is thirteen she got tips twice this year (birthday gift, Christmas treat w mom). I don’t get tips but it doesn’t bother me as a very occasional treat. No pedicures (she doesn’t like them) no highlights yet. I don’t want to start that till she’s old enough to drive herself to the salon as those appointments take forever.
