Subject: With crime increasing why is our city council softening its response?
Because as a policy matter, the DC city government believes that crime is not really the criminal’s fault, it is rather an effect of more general social conditions. Further, they seem to believe that mass incarceration is a greater even than crime. Both considerations argue for more lenience in criminal sentencing. I personally don’t subscribe to either view, but its not like anyone is making a secret of the reasons that are driving these policy choices.

There are war torn countries were children face much more horrible conditions. For all this talk about “privilege,” a lot of people in the US don’t realize that the most destitute people in this country still have running water, access to smartphones, heat, and a lot of other things that are luxuries to truly destitute people in the world. Everyone in this country has privilege relative to a sizable percentage of the world.

Ummm most teens would do stupid teen stuff like underage drinking, smoking pot, maybe light shoplifting. No one is disputing that we need to be more lenient on that stuff with teens/people in general if not repeat offenders. Most teens would not commit random assaults or muggings or kill a guy in a carjacking. Wtf is wrong with you that you think that kind of stuff is normal.

You are welcome to list anything that should result in a more lenient response. Just please don't include muggings, carjackings, and murders. Those should not result in lenient consequences for anyone.

I agree with PP that black kids were disproportionately charged for crimes such as shoplifting, pot smoking, etc. as compared to white kids. But the solution to that problem is not to just give all crimes committed by minors a lenient sentence/response.
So your white kid should be executed by the police for using a fake $20?

Oh, please. Lot's of people face hardship but they don't go out to carjack and kill people.
Agreed. And the overwhelming majority of DC teenagers aren't carjacking or killing either.
