We have Virginia Mist granite, which is a black with gray going through it. We have honed (not shiny, it's matte). I really love it, and it's very low maintenance. You can visit the stoyeyard and pick the slab that has more or less of the gray veining.

Painted islands (like blue which is trendy now) chip mercilessly


I have blue cabinets on my island and have not had this problem, but perhaps it differs based on the paint or method.

Very true. I have white cabinets around the perimeter and navy cabinets on the island (same countertops everywhere).

I am currently liking black honed granite countertops with soft white cabinetry, and a marble island with detailed egde on a dark stained wood island. It makes the island almost look like a fancy piece of furniture.
This kitchen is currently my inspiration... (I am in a period home similar to this one so this will fit in my home)

Whatever you do, skip the matte granite. That really seems like a trend with an expiration date.

Agree. The honed with white cabinets is one of my favorite looks, and certainly not going to expire before gray kitchens and such.
