Every state has a different law about what counts as ID to vote.

And the FACT is that even an state ID (not drivers license) these days is hard to get. Due to COVID waits in my state for an appointment is 4 months. There are no walk in spots.

People who are poor, or elderly, or disabled will struggle mightily to get them even in though they have the RIGHT to vote.

Beyond the appointment you need the fresh paperwork. Elderly people may no longer have access to a birth certificate at all... they may not have been issued one or their courthouse may have burned down. Disabled people who live in group homes or those in nursing homes don't have the transportation to go apply. They may have had valid IDs at one point, but they have expired.

I have friends in Florida who work with a charity that helps people get IDs. They say you won't believe how hard it can be for some people to be able to locate their paperwork.

The GOP is afraid and evil.

Voting is a right. And they want to take it away from the "wrong" people.

I just found this on the Virginia.gov site. Is this what people mean by ID required to vote, or is it just a passport, license or state-issued ID card?

Voters may provide either an acceptable form of ID or sign an ID Confirmation Statement at the polls.

You can show any of the following IDs to vote:
Voter confirmation documents
Virginia driver’s license*
Virginia DMV-issued photo ID
United States passport
Employer-issued photo ID
Student ID issued by any community college or university located in the United States
Other U.S. or Virginia government-issued photo ID
Tribal enrollment or other tribal photo ID
Virginia Voter Photo ID card
A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document containing the name and address of the voter
For a more detailed list of acceptable IDs
Virginia Photo IDs Statistics >>>
* Your DMV license may be used at any time. Virginia law permits an expired DMV license to be used for voting purposes.

The president can't unilaterally create a national ID system or provide people with state IDs. Any national IDs it could issue would have to be accepted as ID for voting, which they wouldn't be because they're not a legal thing right now. This thread is ridiculous.

How did we ever have free and fair elections before the early 2000s and the first voter ID laws?

OP, here is what you don’t get, or maybe you do. In Republican controlled states, acceptable forms of ID were deliberately chosen to favor likely Republican voters. Gun licenses, for example might be fine, while college issued student ID cards might not be, even from State schools. Driver’s Licenses are rarer among younger and more urban voters in some areas. They also cost money, might require a difficult or even impossible to get birth certificate, and might require a trip to a DMV in a location that you need a car to get to. Oops. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.

- Most of us would be fine with a free, government issued ID card — as long as it did not increase our vulnerability to fraud. Pause for a minute and note that the Republicans have never supported this idea. Yep, the party that says that this is needed has zero plans for accomplishing this.

OP here. As I stated in the original posting, I am perfectly aware of the undemocratic intentions of the GOP. Democrats should call their bluff and issue an ID to everyone as part of the Voting Rights Act. This will shut up for good the allegations of voter fraud by undocumented immigrants.

- the most important issue though is that actual voter fraud is infinitesimally small.

Unfortunately 40% or so voters here don't believe in science, facts, or statistics. And you know what else? To pass your progressive agenda you need to win elections. And to win elections you need to peel away some GOP voters. So, democrats would be wise to get the voter ID issue out of the way and, at the same time, empower the people that currently don't have an ID to enjoy all the benefits. For example, of opening a bank account or boarding an airplane.

- While you’re thinking through these issues, maybe pause and look at what’s going on now in Georgia and why the very politicians who are for increased voter “security “ are the same ones who are against the Voting Rights Act.

OP, your use of the word “whining “ suggests that you’re less than sincere. You’re right: it isn’t that hard. Which is why so many Republican politicians are making it harder — at least for some of us. But you knew that.

Of course I know that the GOP purposely makes it hard to vote for citizens that don't lean republican. Just call their bluff, use the presidential bully pulpit and get every citizen an ID like every other fcking country in the world. Come on, Bolivia can do it!

Especially when it can take hours to vote in Georgia in some precincts. Don't suppose they could work on fixing that.

If you oppose a law requiring showing an ID in order to vote, then you are for voter fraud. There is no other plausible reason.

Voting is a right, not a privilege. Furthermore, where is any evidence that there is even voter fraud to begin with? This is just a new way to disenfranchise black people.

Ah, there it is! The same BS excuses.

You really have no idea what you are talking about. It is just a fact that non-white people lack state issued ID more often than whites people. It’s a fact. I know you people really struggle to understand facts but just f**king keep reading that sentence over and over and maybe you’ll get there.

So then you might want to be like...too bad, get an ID. But that’s a different argument. The point is ...RIGHT NOW...requiring an ID has a racist impact. You just literally cannot live in reality.

Stop the hysterics.

There is not an election on "RIGHT NOW". So you'll have quite a while to tell everyone they need to get an ID.

THere’s an election of some kind in every state, every year.

Here’s a question for you....why did they make it illegal to give water to people waiting on line to vote in GA? Maybe that will clue you in a tiny bit as to what is actually going on here.

And to piggyback that on that, why the hell do people have to wait on line for HOURS to vote???
If you really wanted to ensure Americans’ right to vote you’d put more resources into expanded polling locations than BS “security” initiatives.
Because I guarantee you it’s not the folks in the more affluent areas who are out there fir 6 hours waiting to vote.

I think the thought is that people shouldn’t be denied their constitutional right if they don’t have an ID.

Where is an id not required? I am in Maryland and I had to show my I’d the first time I voted in my precinct. After that I didn’t need to show it anymore. I think that’s fine.
