DP. Can't they do both?

These kinds of responses to discussions about increased violent crime are getting really old. Lack of opportunity and inequality are issues that should be addressed, certainly, but they are not excuses for criminal behavior. There are plenty of people who face inequality and lack of opportunity but don't kill people while trying to steal their cars.

They are focused on that, but at the same time the juveniles in the District think they are untouchable and that nothing will happen to them because there are no real consequences for their actions. Perhaps treating all juvenile crime like it’s shoplifting from the corner store isn’t the way to go.

Exactly! They also tapered him. You have no idea how you’d react in a fight or flight situation like that-particularly one where the threats were 7th snd 9th grade girls! It was probably both scary and incredibly confusing. Place the blame where it belongs-these kids and the grown ups who failed them.

This occurred right near Nats Stadium, in the middle of the day. This is hardly a no go zone.

You could probably more easily afford to replace (either directly or through better insurance) to replace your stolen car than could the victim here.

I'm not saying his car was worth his life, but when he is deciding how to respond he has to look at the consequences of handing over his car (and the small chance it goes this bad if he doesn't) differently than most of DCUM does.
