OP, this is why social media is so toxic. The good news is that she and BIL are exposing themselves for the idiots they are. You don't need to say a word. Just let it all play out. The more they post, the more people see they're ridiculous.
I'm part Japanese. I have no problem with geisha costumes or any other depiction of Asian people at Halloween. Some microaggressions can be really burdensome, but this isn't one of them.
They dressed as a racist who abused animals, drugged younger "husbands," and rant about not being able to use the N word. Among many racist statements by Joe Exotic cut out by the director?
He represents angry white racists.
But it was a costume, possibly a Halloween costume, since OP's post suggests that the original incident was some time ago. They presumably weren't dressed like Joe Exotic for a trip to the grocery store or a family dinner. People dress like monsters and villains for Halloween; we don't say that they are pro-monster or pro-villain.

I'm the poster above, not OP. I just read about Tiger King and see that Joe Exotic is actually racist. So yeah, it appears OP is racist. I feel sorry for your sister-in-law and that she married into a racist family. At least her husband supports her views.

I have a feeling there was a confederate flag involved. It would be in character fir a tiger king costume and yes, OP, it is in bad taste. You should have apologized instead of doubling down that you guys were just having some fun.
I don't see where OP doubled down on anything. She and her husband left the group chat. Other family members told the brother and girlfriend that they were overreacting.
And while the use of a Confederate flag would definitely be in bad taste, bad taste isn't the same thing as racism. Unless something about the costume suggested that they were endorsing the flag or what it stood for, versus using it as part of a costume depicting a racist person. (Assuming there even was a flag involved.)

The only way I can see racism here (and even this is a stretch) is if GF didn't recognize the characters and thought OP was doing a "white trash" costume.
Or girlfriend read about Joe Exotic being a mad racist.
