OP, you can privately do some research. Know, really know, what you can afford. Know what that buys, if you assume full pay.

My DS will never want to go to UMD if he sees how bad they've been, lol. I've seen glimmers more recently though.

Don't bother your kid about the college thing and having to get into a great school etc just so you can say my kid is going....

let them do the work, talk about money and how it will impact things further down the road if loans are needed but less stress and enjoy the high school years has been our go to

Everyone is doing just fine and happy.
