I have close friends in immigration legal services and policy advocacy in orgs serving these kids. This is exactly what happens. Most kids come with contact info for the relative whose name they provide to the ORR-funded staff at the shelter where they are held. The US based contacts are expecting the call from the shelter staff. They have documentation proving they are the right person and confirming familial contact.
Sometimes kids are sent back properly (when no US based sponsor can be identified and foster care is the only option).
What do you think happens to unaccompanied kids?
DP. So in other words, they make contact with a relative who is already here illegally, and then the child is free to go live - illegally - with the relative. Got it.
Dp. Yes this is what happens. They all have illegal relatives here who crossed before. Or maybe even legal.

I understand we have a crisis.
We had a crisis in Summer 2018, too. They ramped up. They’ll ramp up again. Unfortunately, people will need to be patient. Processing will take longer. Some will wait in makeshift facilities that aren’t as nice as the long-standing shelters.
What do you think will happen? Are you afraid they’ll just release people on their own? That won’t happen. Most adults will be sent back eventually (they have court proceedings first). Most kids will be sent to live with their relative/sponsor.

The issue is that many of them are not kids. There is no id required for "children" so 20 can easily become 16. Sixteen lets you stay in the US and gives you access to school and all of its support services. I am very pre-immigration but not in a whoever can get over the border first way.
You might be surprised to hear that doctors are employed to determine age if it can’t be confirmed with legit documentation.
18 year olds are housed in jail like settings. A 17 year old who has spent weeks in the youth shelter is quickly transferred to the adult setting when he turns 18.
You’re just making assumptions that aren’t true.

Thousands of them are getting sent to the Dallas Convention Center for now. I guarantee you, your friends don’t have nearly enough colleagues to process these people. You seem to be unaware of the numbers flooding in, you know, since Biden encouraged them from all over the world. Maybe you could volunteer to help your friend. They’re swamped.
I know they’re swamped.
But they won’t toss kids out on the street. And they won’t turn them over to alleged relatives without proof. It’s a process. Sometimes the process happens quickly, and sometimes it takes 60 days or more.
They’ll staff up to handle the influx. And some kids will be stuck waiting for a while.
And yet all of that was horrific and unacceptable under the last administration. Interesting change in tone.
