I say this because once my kids started wearing underwear both were HIGHLY resistant to pulls up or diapers. One of them would accept that at night for a while, but the other refused all of it pretty much right away. EVen when it would have been a good idea, she would refuse.

We've been doing long road trips (12 hours) with our kids since they were babies and once they were potty-trained, we always put them in pull ups for the ride. I think we stopped around age 3.5 or so. On nearly every trip, we would be stuck in traffic or driving through a desolate stretch when they would have to go. The pull ups were just a back up in case there was an accident. No potty training regression for either kid.

I also highly recommend the potette or similar travel potty. Super convenient in case there isn't an actual bathroom to use or in case the public bathroom is filthy.

How about a port a potty type thing. I've seen them and my friends used them.

We used pull ups until our DD could reliably hold it for longer than 1-2 hours and wasn't having ng accidents while asleep. She understood that it was for car trips/naps only. No issues with regression.
I wasn't comfortable with putting a towel in between her and the car seat, because it would need to be an awfully thick towel to actually do any effective absorption. Car seats arent exactly easy to clean out, especially on a road trip.

We used something like the product below many years ago when DH had to travel with my toddler DD and didn't want to take her into the men's restroom (they tend to be messier than the women's.)
