I disagree. My 1st grader is prepping for Math Kangaroo and the way he has learned math is so very different than mine (or DH's). He understands and solves the problems in a much more intuitive way. He's doing RSM online and I love it. I do also teach him myself but the way they are learning at RSM (or the other supplemental places) is much different than the way we learned to do math.
I agree with using different supplemental resources to help out with their curriculum from school. Another curriculum we've tried and loved is Beestar - it's also been really helpful with the online math competition. It's been very helpful for the kids.

This. Each class includes over $100 of books. My kid took the 4th grade language arts class last year and got Caesar's English I, Paragraph Town, Grammar Town, and 4 different novels that they read for the class.

I've been considering AoPS. We've done mathnasium for about 1 year now. My 5th grade daughter is doing 8th grade pre-algebra now. I don't know how much of a base she is getting, but she keeps progressing. We like the scheduling flexibility and the no homework since she plays multiple sports.

I have not actively listened in to a class for a bit. I have heard the Teacher ask for volunteers to read different parts out of the book. She calls in different students to show how they solved problems and to discuss the different ways to solve the problem. She answers kids questions and has asked specific students if they understand the explanation. I have heard her ask a student to stay on at the end of the class so she can help them with a concept they were struggling with.
It feels like a regular math classroom, it does not feel like tutoring or anything that was individualized. We have no experience with Mathnasium so I cannot compare. DS has not needed help with any of the homework or the like so I am not certain what we would do if he was struggling with something presented in the class.
I have heard kids ask for help and ask questions and say that they do not understand what is being taught. Kids are encouraged to get things wrong and ask for help. The Teacher has been supportive of the kids who need additional explinations, or that is how it has sounded to me.
With registration fees, it's at least $1,650 for 36 classes (three quarters). So about $50 per class that lasts 1 hour and 45 min. Or $26 per hour.
