Running DCPS is by no means an easy job. However I don't think anyone thinks we are getting good service from the current system.
We definitely are not, but the answer is definitely NOT to give more control to teachers unions who will further prioritize themselves at the expense of what’s good for kids.

OP. I have a kid with an IEP. The tweet is really shameless. You can’t be keeping kids out of school and claiming that you care.
+1. Robert White supported WTU's efforts to not reopen for these vulnerable students in November. This was a last ditch effort my DCPS to get only 11 vulnerable students per grade back in school after WTU thwarted plans to reopen for more students. He was instrumental in getting the November reopening canceled for my SPED kids who were falling further behind their neurotypical peers with distance learning. Never forget that that Robert White has NEVER been a friend of SPED, ELL, and homeless children (many of whom are children of color).
What's truly disgusting now is how Robert White and Janeese Lewis George are feigning concern about equity when in fact their proposed legislation (below) would give more power to WTU by 1) moving schools under the SBOE whose membership is very pro-WTU and 2) changing the laws to allow WTU members to serve on the SBOE which is a conflict of interest.
They claim that teachers "care deeply about children" so they should be able to govern the school system. WTU has already demonstrated to the world that they don't care about the children. Schools would be LESS likely to fully reopen and further harm vulnerable students if this legislation passes. All Robert White and Janeese Lewis George care about is their WTU endorsements. They're truly garbage people.

I should add that Robert White also opposed reopening in February and again supported WTU's efforts to thwart reopening in February. Anyone who thinks their legislation would do anything other than hamper reopening is a damn fool.
Well, you clearly have an axe to grind with WTU. At the end of the day, it’s the mayor and chancellor’s fault that schools are not open. Millions of kids with strong teachers unions are attending school in person right now. I’ll be happy to see OSSE and the SBOE have more autonomy from the mayor’s office, personally.
I don’t think it really matters if DCPS teachers serve on the SBOE one way or the other, but I’ll be damned if charter school teachers can while DCPS teachers cannot. I’m sick and tired of the mayor prioritizing charter lobbyists while traditional public school advocates get crumbs.
Okay, that's just not true. Strong teacher union basically equals very few in person schoolkids countrywide (maybe a few now, but many fewer than in other places). NYC is the only exception - and look at the mayor's role there.

you’re delusional if you think an independent school board would have done better than the mayor.

agreed. if we’ve learned no other lesson, it’s that teachers unions need to be kept as far away as possible from power over the school system. I think it’s fine for them to negotiate for pay and benefits, but they’ve made *extremely* clear that they will distort anything to gain bargaining power, and that “caring deeply about children” has nothing to do with it.

This. All y’all whining about the WTU and giving the mayor and Ferebee a pass really haven’t been paying attention.
