It will look cheap.

Show me a picture of a VS1 ring next to a VVS1 ring, with other attributes being similar, where you can see a difference.

No. Get a high quality ring.

Were you under the mistaken impression that rings have decent resale value? They don't. Rings are to impress the bride, family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers. Any quality level that is not discernible to the naked eye is a waste of money pure and simple. Size is always discernible to the naked eye.

Larger stone with good quality. My own diamond has a flaw in it. You can see it with the naked eye if you know exactly where to look and of course a jeweler would know immediately. But the superior color and cut make it look great out and about in the world.

I would always opt for the smaller, higher quality ring. She will probably love either one in the moment and for a few years— the novelty of the ring and what it means makes you love it.

But 1.5 is not small at all, and remember she will have it forever. The 1.5 will be easier to wear, and higher quality means she can pass it on to a daughter or future DIL knowing she’s giving something really good quality.

Both of those clarities are too high. Go lower clarity and even larger and/or save money

This is not a question to crowd source. You should know your GF well enough to know the answer to this question. If you don’t know her, why would you propose?

This decision can only be made knowing the characteristics of the ring. First, I assume both are GIA graded? If not, the supposed color, clarity, etc. mean very little. Second, many gradations of color are not obvious to the human eye unless you hold the diamonds side by side. A g diamond will not be noticeably less white than a d diamond to most people. As far as inclusions go, most VS1-VS2 rings do not have any identifiable flaws to the human eye. Cut grading means nothing except for round diamonds, so I assume you have looked up some of the more ideal dimensions for various cuts (e.g. princess). The reason I am saying all of this is that a lot of people ignorantly assume that a VVS2, d color, ideal cut princess diamond is substantially better than a VS1, g color, good cut princess diamond. The reality is that nobody will ever notice the difference between these two diamonds but they will certainly notice the size difference!
