Every time I see a story about the local DC gov's incompetence, I'm always surprised that people are surprised at how messed up it is. It's been a shitshow from day 1; that's the whole MO.
This is why I oppose statehood. Really. I know if the * ever really hits the fan, the Feds will eventually step in. I'm waiting for them to ask DC why we are last in the land inoculating residents for example, and then just take over. Behind Texas even , according to the NY Times tracker today
I'm opposed to statehood too. I'm consistently astounded by the horrible decisions of our elected officials and my fellow DC voters. I don't want these people any more responsible for my welfare than they already are.
I sort of understand where this sentiment comes from, but I don't agree poor government - which, yes, the topic of this thread is one more good example of - is a reason to deny citizens of the District statehood. I grew up in Illinois and Missouri and lived in Kansas for awhile, and trust me, those states are every. single. bit. as crony-stuffed and utterly dysfunctional as DC (I mean, Jesus, remember Brownback?) - although of course the culprits are almost all white so they just slide on by as part of the good ol' boy business as usual network. I suspect DC would actually run better if it were a state and didn't have Congress all up in its business all the time.
+1 The right to representative government is fundamental, not a reward. There is no competence/good governance test for states.
It doesn't change the fact that right now DC has a safety net that some DC residents are concerned about removing.
Yes. The only point PP made for me is that maybe poorly run states should have federal oversight. As to DC, it's far better with oversight, and that oversight is my safety net as a native Washingtonian. "If it aint broke..."

I wouldn't go this far. The woman is not corrupt. She actually is smart, but why let her run OCTO with no experience is amazing and crazy. She has literally NO experience in IT. She hasn't even been responsible for an IT team before. Apparently is a favorite of the Mayor's. Really dumb!

Thanks, OP. As an IT person, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they couldn't ensure scalability, waiting rooms, etc. for the vaccine registration system. I've built much more complex systems for the Federal government. This is a really simple system and it's astounding how badly it failed given available technology.

Could we? It really does feel like our city is sliding back into its Barry era. Really since Vince Gray but the process is accelerating now. A new Williams administration would be very welcome.
I don't think he's interested, which speaks to his character. He was a technocrat and never wanted to be Mayor for Life. What a good dude. Wish he would run for president. He and Hogan would be a good ticket, though a woman would be nice too. I am surprised he has never been tapped for a Cabinet position.
