AU has improved over the past decade, and GWU has not had good leadership. They’re equivalent at this point. Both schools have the respect of employers in the region, and international service and political science programs are considered prestigious. (Check out the rankings in Foreign Policy magazine.)

I got an MA at American but would not have spent the money there for undergrad. I think it’s worth only for certain programs like international service, pre-law or law, journalism and communications, and political science. I know there are a lot of internship opportunities in DC and they help facilitate those which also make it strong for the aforementioned areas. I got an internship while I was in grad school which, along with my MA, surely helped me land a job in my field after I got my degree. AU definitely has name recognition in DC but I agree has an inferior reputation compared to GW and Georgetown, except for the programs I mentioned. I think the campus is fine, I mean it’s not huge but in my view preferable to GW which feels so disjointed.

I went to AU (though it has been a while). I liked that it had a campussy feel but you still had all the DC opportuities. I got great merit aid. I eventually went to Georgetown for a masters. I did not think it was so academically superior.

American U is not with the money. Its $67,000 full fright which is most readers of this forum. Virginia a tech is $27k for in-state and a better reputation

I find "UMD" offensive. What if DC doesn't want to study to be an MD? Does this name imply that getting an MD is as simple as attending a U like Maryland?
