Wow. Talk about a sheep. Vaccines are a PUBLIC health matter. If my child is vaccinated for chix pox (Varicella) but 50% of the class isn't and they all come down with chix pox, it is likely that my child will have some symptoms. This is why it benefits everyone to vaccinate.

While I do agree with vaccinating against those old childhood diseases, I am vehemently opposed to the HPV vaccine and I will use any exemption available and break any law to exempt my daughters from it.

There is a lot more controversy and madness in medicine than you, as a consumer, can perceive from your POV.

If your child has a very specific medical reason not to vaccinate -- like a bad reaction to a prior vaccine -- then thats something else entirely. I don't know why that means the rest of us are sheep. And I am fairly shocked that someone who practices medicine would oppose a basic public health measure.

I'm 15:16, and I apologize, I wasn't responding to you, but to the poster who seems to be militant about not vaccinating. I was wondering why she doesn't. I have yet to come across a reason why I shouldn't vaccinate my kids, and I am wondering what non-religious and non-medical reasons someone else might have. However, it appears that if the same poster is the one who posted later about a medical reason (bad reaction to a vaccine) that answers my question, there is no non-medical reason.

For the very simple reason that your choice not to vaccinate risks the health of my child if he/she is in school with yours. If you were only risking your kid's health - then agree - it is your business. But that is not the case - you raise the risk for everyone your child comes in contact with.

Because your decision not to vaccinate may have a direct and negative impact on my children, that's why. If I bring my 3 month old with me to pick up my preschooler and your kid, my child's classmate, is harboring some virus because of your decision not to vaccinate, my baby is vulnerable.

If you have a medical reason not to get a vaccine (e.g, an egg allergy for some vaccines), you should be able to receive the exemption legitimately. But if it is not a legitimate reason even according to medical opinion, then you should get your kid vaccinated.

according to postings on urbanbaby, NYC private schools are now investigating and challenging families on the religious exemption. NYS is generally more aggresive about vaccinations than either DC or MD, but I wish that this would happen here . . .

this irresponsible parent that want his/her child to be in a private school next to my child does not consider that in this globalized world it only takes one child to bring a disease back to the school from his/her spring break trip to Jamaica or his/her summer safari in Africa.

I think there are several of us PP's who object to people's right to use the religious exemption as an excuse not to vaccinate.

Why don't you educate us as to why we shouldn't vaccinate? Once again, this becomes one of those ridiculous arguments where you (non-vaccinator) get angrier and angrier about how you have every right not not vaccinate, that you've done so much research, that the rest of us are sheep, blah blah blah, but you never come out and say WHY you don't vaccinate.

I will say why I DO vaccinate. Because I believe that vaccinations help to save lives. Because I believe that the benefits (which are many) outweigh the risks.
