You’ll stay in Chincoteague, VA which is a little beach town. You cross over a bridge into Assateague and there will be national park gates. There is no where to stay on Assateague unless you camp. It’s also accessible from Maryland on the northern side.
We like to rent VRBOs close to that bridge so you can bike across. The hotels are mainly on the other side of the island So you have to drive.
Spring break time will likely be cold and windy unless you luck out on weather.
Don’t miss the ice cream shop!!
What about staying in Berlin, MD? That way you're only a 15 minute drive to Assateague instead of an hour from Chincoteague. Has anyone done this? Any feedback? I know it's covid times, but we're looking at staying nearer to Assateague yet not camping.
I think you'd be better off staying in Ocean City than Berlin. There's not much in Berlin -- it's where a lot of the year rounders live who work in OC. Ocean City will not be that crazy at spring break time. The Cambria is a newer hotel at the south end with pretty water views and an indoor pool. Of course, it depends on your comfort level with a hotel.
Question for those who know Assateague/Chincoteague well: can we do both in one day in a day trip from Ocean City? We'll be there for a few days in early April. Or would we want to plan to go to Assateague State Park in MD one day and drive down to Chincoteague another day?
