I do think not having screen names and anonymity makes it easier for people to type out what would otherwise be just a fleeting mean thought and share it. I know that if my name (even if just a screen name) were associated with my posts I'd do more editing/sugar coating often.

Lots of what more sensitive personalities find mean are either blunt or disagreeing; I think so many on here are conditioned to getting their way irl that they have a hard time accepting any criticism, snark, etc. on an anonymous forum.

I agree too many people are too quick to be mean and derisive.
But there’s also cases where posters just need to hear hard truths and there’s not a nice way to say it. Like the doctor with the girlfriend constantly posting thirsty videos on social media. He needed to hear that he needs to seriously reassess what he is looking for in a woman. Being nice to him wasn’t going to do him any favors, really. So I’m sometimes sympathetic to some of the mean posters when the OP is just so ridiculous and wants to be coddled in their ridiculousness.

Because a lot of people are ugly on the inside.

You could say something totally innocuous and it gets twisted on here.
