There are no direct flights from DC but you can connect through Chicago, Minneapolis, Denver, Salt Lake, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta as well as Newark or Boston. United, Delta and American among others all fly there. Bozeman is so much easier to fly into than small mountain airports in Colorado - huge runway, little turbulance. Also lovely airport - fireplaces in waiting areas and a restaurant so nice my family asks to get to the airport early so they can eat there.
As others have said, look at houses in Moonlight if you want ski on ski off. If this is for 2022, there is a Montage hotel opening as well that should be fabulous. The main village/town area is actually separate from the ski resort (about three miles down the hill). Great for restaurants and shopping but not if you want ski on ski off, you will need to grab a shuttle to ski.

Don’t know much about Big Sky, but Bozeman is expensive to fly into- at least for a domestic destination.
I have gotten super cheap flights to Bozeman during ski season before -- much cheaper than flights to Dever or SLC.

Well late December 2021 into January 2022.
I know it’s far in advance but I think planning a big trip will be a fun thing to look forward to.
(No I definitely didn’t pick a place because there wasn’t a mask mandate. Would someone really do that? Isn’t that asking to get COVID?)
Thanks for all of the tips. I have been looking at some lovely homes but I do think the resort that an earlier poster linked may be the easiest option. Convenience is key with the kids.

No. And Montana doesn’t have a mask mandate which is likely why OP is picking it
