Exactly, the neighbor just wanted to walk over and make conversation and the dirty car was the "in." He didn't expect you to be hurt, he expected you to continue the conversation by telling him about the ski trip.

Neighbor sounds like he thought he was being helpful. Give him the benefit of the doubt and let it go.

Haha this reminds me of something my dad would have done. He was always reminding us to make sure to get the salt and wintry mix of sludge off our cars, especially underneath.

He was also the guy who would bring a fire extinguisher and high tech flashlight to a Yankee swap party.

I doubt he was trying to be rude. He probably thought he was being helpful since salt, sand, etc really isn't good for a car.

The rain won’t get the salt off bottom of car. A car wash does that

Agree OP. Salt is damaging to cars. He may not have been thinking in terms of aesthetics at all. Also, people get excited about places they patronize and during COVID times, any friendly talk of a local business is positive and uplifting.
