My great Aunt Fern has too much to drink and broke her hip at our wedding reception. Paramedics and the fire truck came and took her to the hospital on a stretcher while Shevardnadze screamed in agony. There was a mass exodus of guests after that.

She’s fine now. But the name Fern minds me of a sparse dance floor and uneaten cake.

I love it, even though the only Fern I ever met was despicable. Her hate-filled bigotry wasn't enough to overpower the positive association of this name with the character in Charlotte's Web.

To the person who'd never heard of Fern as a name, please go read the book right. now.
