No, check with him. You ask "are you dry?" and have him check himself. At the start, you have to do it, too. Then he figures it out. I wouldn't expect it to work well with diapers or disposable training pants, though.

This is part of the old "Toilet Training In Less Than A Day" method, which we've found to be super effective for our three, and mostly lives up to its title. Being super excited about the potty for eight to ten hours was *exhausting*, though.

I agree with this. And, OP, proceed with caution. Both of my nephews were that way and at 5 and 6 they both still don't care and have frequent (multiple times a week) accidents. It will just click for some kids, but for others it can turn into a battle you're fighting for years. For a 3ish year old (give or take a few months), I would do naked potty training and bribe if needed. Not worth the risk to me.

That's why you start earlier when they're pliable. It's less of a battle if you do it at 20-30 months. They're eager to please.

PP here. FOR SURE. My kids were potty trained a full two years before my SILs, if you can even call a 6 year old having multiple accidents a week fully potty trained. I'm just pointing out that "doesn't care" can turn into learned behavior to intentionally ignore wet clothes if the kid gets to preschool age and that behavior is being reinforced by inconsistent potty training efforts. It may be hard and unpleasant, but my younger nephew couldn't start preschool at age 4 because he wasn't potty trained and just. didn't. care.
