At those magnets, according to posts here only a select few take Algebra in 6th. Many take Algebra in 7th. They are just changing the names of the classes to go along with LearnZillion math. Stop freaking out about it.

Yes, I contacted the school and was told this information. I'm interested in what others are being told for their 6th graders, particularly students who are now in compacted math.
Fair enough. I’m PP and we are being offered AIM.
AIM is being offered. They are calling it something different to go along with the new curriculum.

(I have a compacted math kid who is going into 6th next year). Are all schools following this pathway due to Covid? We were told the kids could double up Geometry and Algebra II in 9th grade to "catch up" to the old pathway.
I noticed that too on the middle school presentation. I haven’t talked to the school yet but I’m so fed up, we are moving to private for middle school.

If nothing else, it doesn't make any sense. If *everyone* is having learning loss, then the kids currently in Math 5 won't be ready for Math 6 anyway.
But we know learning loss is concentrated among the kids who were struggling anyway. It's not equally distributed across the entire county. So putting kids who have finished Math 5/6 into Math 6 with kids who haven't been in school since Math 4 is just going to create more problems than it solves.
You make so much sense, but MCPS is not making a lot of sense these days so who knows what they are planning. I will flip out if my child has to repeat Math 6 next year.
Our middle school is calling it math6+ for those who were in compacted then they would take math 7+ and algebra in 8th. But it looks like math 6+ is still math 6, just more in depth. Also these kids will end up being a whole year behind in math by high school.
Math 6+ was originally presented as being *in addition to* AIM.
What do you mean that the kids would be behind, by the way? Algebra in 9th is the national norm for "on track" kids, and Algebra in 8th is the national norm for "advanced" kids.
