I wondered this, too. He abdicated for her, which people thought was very romantic. And then they ended up living in exile, alienated from family, dependent on an allowance, without children, and were Nazi sympathizers who got shunted off to the Bahamas (which they hated) during WWII because people didn't trust them.
The house itself isn't at all to my taste -- too cold, too fussy, too many portraits of her -- but I loved the note that you can get pug pillows like hers from Etsy! Truly, elegance personified.
