And honestly, a monitor or a teacher in the classroom doesn't really matter. Teachers in the classroom are going to be staying at their desk to Teach so the kids at home see what is happening. The Teachers are not going to be walking around the classroom and helping kids in person. There have been plenty of people discussing this, the Teachers who worked in the pilot programs and parents whose kids were in those programs. The Monitors are only there to help troubleshoot issues and make sure the kids stay at their desks and wear their masks.

Are you sure the teacher is still going to teaching from home? I thought with the vaccine out now maybe there might be a change of heart?

It will be the Teachers choice. ADA decisions have been made, the Teacher does not have to Teach at school this year.

As for why not mention not wanting a Monitor, well, if you get to switch to avoid the Monitor, why can’t others? The argument that your child would be more engaged in AAP is focused only on his educational needs to be challenged. The Monitor argument is just your trying to circumvent a crappy situation. One you give the Principal a reason to say yes. The other is probably an automatic no because it sets a precedent.

you just described half the advanced math class in our ES and they don't all get placed (in fact the majority don't)

DP. It's not weird for a LIII and advanced math kid not to be placed in the LIV classroom. It is weird for a principal to have drastically unbalanced classes, with only 17 kids in the AAP classroom and 29 kids in the gen ed classrooms when there are LIII + advanced class kids available for principal placement. Cramming 29 kids into a gen ed classroom means that the gen ed kids will likely not have their needs met. Having tiny AAP classes makes it look like those kids are getting highly preferential treatment.

If this school has 3 gen ed classrooms and 1 AAP one, principal placing the 9 brightest LIII kids into the AAP class would at least lead to 26 kids in each classroom.

OP here. Indeed this is very true. It is a long standing belief at our school that the AAP students get preferential treatment and their class size has always been about 9 kids smaller than the counterpart GenEd classes. Further, this school has a high rate of FARMS and ESOL students and NONE of those students are ever in the AAP class. Needless to say but it is very true that the needs of the Level III students (or my DC) are being met in the GenEd class. All I hear happen in that class is the teacher giving and repeating directions. Very little instruction is happening. It is frustrating for my DC who is very eager to learn and to get feedback. We had accepted it for this year but we just found out that the teacher does not plan to return so now I have to give him the news that he is to go to school and not even see this teacher who barely engages him. It's disheartening when it could be an easy fix--place him with his friends and teacher he also likes-LevelIV.

Dunno. Everyone says that SS, Science or LA is the SAME as the AAP kids and that it is only math that is different. Well, he's doing the math and excelling. He has a DRA of 40 and has always scored above 95 percentile in iready.

My understanding is that they cover the same topics but that the AAP class goes into greater depth then the Gen Ed class. There is suppose to be some difference, otherwise all they would need is a separate Advanced Math class. We deferred AAP for our child because we did not want to send him to the Center school this year. I know that his level III class has touched on some subjects that are discussed in the Gen Ed class but with more depth. So when his regular class was studying Egypt, the Level III pullout did some extra work with hieroglyphics and developing writing systems. They have done something similar with science as well.

I think that it is totally doable, moving into the AAP class, but the Principal might say no because of the different work the kids have been doing. Not judging where your child belongs, but find it a bit strange since I believe it is unusual to be in your child's position. I would have thought that the Principal would have placed your child in the Level IV class at the beginning of the year given your child's involvement in Level III and Advanced Math.

OP here. That makes sense and I do think it is weird my child didn't get PP in Level IV but given that this year started virtual, I think the Principal just wanted to simplify things for herself. But with the return, I am wondering if I should advocate for my child because he is far less engaged in GenEd than he is in LevelIV.

I would focus on how engaged your child is during Level IIII pull outs and Advanced Math but does not share the same excitement discussing regular class work. That they are really engaged in the advanced work and you think that they might be more engaged in the AAP class, if there is room. And since we are starting the third quarter this might be a good time to move and try the AAP class.

Don't mention the Monitor vs not Monitor thing, that will probably be a no go

Why would that be a no go? That's essentially the crux. I would never make this mid-year request otherwise even though I really 100% believe that AAP is more engaging for my child. I see it daily.
