My grandfather always had a glass of cognac after dinner. That is, of course, in addition to the martini he had before dinner.

Around Christmastime, I love milk punch, which can be made with bourbon or brandy. I don't love brandy just by itself, though.

Generational changes.

Most of these English books of pre WWII were written by and for the upper middle and upper classes, which is why all the kids always go to boarding school and everyone has servants.

Brandy and sherry and port and maderia were common spirits. Cocktails started coming in during the 1920s but the older generation stuck with the spirits. A similar thing did happen in the US.

Brandy is a broad term to describe the liquor produced by distilling any fruit mash. I love them! I don't drink often though so the only ones I keep on hand are applejack (American apple brandy) and Cognac which are quite versatile in cocktails.

So what are some good brands of brandy to have on hand? Hennessey? If you wanted to have snifter of brandy tonight, on this cold rainy evening, what would you go out and buy right now?

I like Hennessey. I also have a soft spot for Courvoisier because of the "Ladies Man" skits from SNL.

PS--I am the OP of the sherry thread, and was inspired to find your thread after you mentioned it.

Cognac, grappa, calvados, etc are all types of brandy.

I thought this was apple liquor, my mother used to put it in summer pudding (fruit pudding)

Love calvados, I think it is apple brandy, so you are both right.

Not the OP, but I'm going to try this!
