Oh dear, PP. Where was your help in your hour of need? But--all's well that ends well!

Pardon me for being so gauche. On that afternoon, our family's letter opener was no where to be found, as I was told. Unfortunately, I lack patience and to avoid ruining a fresh manicure, quickly and discretely I placed the envelope near my mouth, and used my teeth to pry the chubby envelope open. My heart skipped at least a beat as I read the first congratulatory sentence.

Fortunately, the letter wasn't harmed due to my recklessness. As I glance over at it now, it looks absolutely stunning in its frame on the mantle.

Was your child accepted to an elite private school?

For those of us who have gotten the gold medal, it is a memorable moment.

Thank you! I love this thread, it provided a much needed laugh on this cold windy day!! Love it!!!

I opened the letter and a bumper sticker fell out. That was my first clue.

I don't remember what I was doing, but I remember when we told our son where he was going to school next year. He had a complete tantrum, "no! I don't want to go to that school, I want to go to ACB school!"

Livid with anger that I would have to pay tuition. Wanted to move to an area with good small school district __ NOT the huge bungling county wide systems found sou7th of the Mason Dixon line.

Does your story count if you weren't accepted to a "Big 3?"

If so, I was reading Washington Life Magazine with high hopes of someday seeing myself in it's glossy pages when I heard the "thunk" of the mail falling through the slot in our door.

As soon as I heard the "thunk" I knew it was a sign...

I was polishing my Harvard ring in my great great grandmother's federal-period wing chair. My semi-regular cleaning lady/nanny Lourdes from Guatemala brought in the mail before feeding my three children lunch and taking them to Volta Park for a few hours, the time I needed daily to get important shopping errands done. I was so excited I dropped my Harvard ring and it bounced in the fireplace, and Lourdes had to crawl in and find it.

"the agony"? ...hopefully you have long since recovered from your postpartum depression. does your child owe you something for being born?

Actually, after several successful years in DCPS, I'm dreading my rising middle schooler getting accepted to one of the three privates we applied. Does anyone get that superficiality and being one of a select group is actually OFF-PUTTING to many families, down to earth families we would hope relate to our kids? We are simply growing beyond the limitations of public ed., hope our high achieving child may find smaller classes, quality arts programming, regular p.e. (which is a sad failure in DCPS),and differentiated instruction It would be awful to find these things are only an option if swimming among sharks. that's how so many posts sound on the private school line.

Who's your surgeon? We're applying to schools next year, and my saddle bags ruin the look of my Escada jeans.
