I get the impression OP is a healthy weight already but wants to stay that one.

Lots of protein and veggies. Limit sugar and alcohol as much as possible (I would say eliminate but we've gotta live a little, right?)

Honestly, I think due to hormones that alcohol is one of the worst things in your 40s. It messes with your metabolism and makes calories add up too quickly.

I significantly increased my protein intake. I eat many fewer carbs than I did in my 30s. I'm 52 and am still the same size (size 6) that I was in my 30s. I've completely changed the way I eat. In my early 40s I moved to Paleo which helped a lot. I don't strictly do Paleo anymore, but it is probably the foundation of my diet.

It's basically this. You need to exercise for health and fitness, but for most older women, the weight will only stay off if you eat less.

I should add not by means of crazy diets. Just eat smaller portions of healthy foods and cut out alcohol and treats as much as you can. If you start doing looney things and skipping meals, that's just stupid.

Yes this. I don’t cut out complete food groups. I indulge once in a while, but I also skip meals too. Once in a while I’ll do an all day fast. I weigh myself a couple times a week. My exercise during Covid (my gym shut down) is a hour a day walking most days of the week and a strength training 25 minute show on the tv a couple times a week.
I’m exercising less now because of my gym but my weight is consistent because of my eating.

Op here—thanks everyone! Glad to know I’m not going crazy and this is actually a thing. What everyone’s saying fits with what I’m experiencing too, so I will just figure out which modifications help and that I can live with!

As someone in their late 40's (soon to be 49), what's worked is eating a lot less, focusing on protein and veggies, and keeping up the exercise/weight-lifting. Sadly, however, the first one is the most important. To maintain your weight/physique, especially as you get into your later 40's, it's all about eating less. Very hard to outrun the fork. I wish it were otherwise!

Don’t diet. It messes up your metabolism. IF. Weight lifting vs cardio.

+1. Personally I find it easier to move more rather than change my diet. Get active every day.
