B. Smith's. That was one of my favorite restaurants until it closed. The jazz brunch was lovely, the Swamp Thing was delicious, and the pecan praline topped sweet potato pie was the bomb.

Ten Penh is probably my favorite DC restaurant ever. It makes me want to cry when I think I can never experience those meals or that ambience again. The new location has a very different menu and would not work for me.

Not sure I remember what was specific to 2000 vs before and after. Agree with some of the ones named. Loved Vidalia and Georgia Brown's - southern food was on trend. Mendocino Grill in Georgetown. Rio Grande (the old one, not the current one). Cafe Berlin. And the really nice place upstairs from Cafe Berlin - decorated with chintz and damask. What was that called?

My 2000 GF was vegetarian and we were broke. Ethiopian restaurants in Adams Morgan. Shout out for My Brother's Place. Mongolian BBQ was big, so was Thai. I think Tara Thai was a reliable first date place for me in those years.

I was making time over at Guapo's in Tenleytown and at the baked potato place over on Wisconsin (WHAT was it called)??

That's Amore in Bethesda was my go-to for a romantic Italian meal, and sometimes I'd indulge with a pupusa at Haydee's up in Mt. Pleasant if I was feeling frisky.

I always liked sushi, so Cafe Asia for happy hour, Kotobuki if we didn't mind going out of our way for great sushi deals, and Cafe Japone at night.
