It is definitely crowded over the summer and typical travel times but if you go outside of those times, it is great. So many golf courses, mini golf for the kids, ice cream shops, miles of bike paths, lots of restaurants, children’s museum, coastal discovery museum, different plantations to visit, day trip to Savannah. We have children so we really like that there are more things to do in HHI. We found Kiawah a little limited for a week long vacation with kids. Although, my husband and I have been to Kiawah several times for a long weekend and loved it.
But most people don’t want to do these things during Covid anyway.

I despise HHI... it’s just too many people for me.

More options for food, grocery, shopping, etc. Water on Hilton Head tends to be a lot shallower and calmer than Kiawah. You are only a short drive from Savannah so you can still get a bit history if you want.
I wouldn’t do it this year but you can also fly, which you can’t do to Kiawah.
you can fly to Charleston, which is 30-40 minutes from Kiawah. The resort probably operates a shuttle to the airport -- they did years ago at least.
I like Kiawah better -- it's a lot less commercial than HHI.
