What’s wrong with it?

Bad coaching (pressure to win, injury rate, subpar training, zero development, etc)

This.

My DD has no interest in HS, but wanted to play in MS with her friends. She regretted it so much. The coach asked me if she’d keep playing the following seasons. Haha. A resounding no!

This not.

My DD sobbed when her senior year was stolen over a hyped up covid last March. My other DD cannot wait for HS to start.

Like everything in life, what you get and what you have and what you put is a big difference. Sorry your daughter had a crappy coach.

Did you try to get him fired or disciplined with the AD for being mediocre?

No!? Then maybe time to just 🤫

Seeing that a majority of the HS coaches are Travel coaches....

Hmmmm.....

The basic structure of HS soccer, regardless of the coach, simply makes development and playing anything but the simplest style of soccer impossible.

I don’t have 4-3-3 as my go-to system. But my girls play very simple and beautiful soccer.

Will any LoCo team be state champion this year?

On either boys or girls side.

Take Arlington, for example. Yorktown and Washington-Lee high school (think they renamed it) are right in the middle of Arlington county, so probably 100% of their players have all played competitively soccer for Arlington Soccer Association under the same group of coaches. If you are a red/white player you can make your high school team.

So when they get to high school, the HS coaches know exactly where everyone is and what they have been taught up to that point.

Most high schools aren't so lucky and are situated in areas that have a very organized club soccer scene, or cris-cross different club boundaries, or the players in the high school play for a smattering of different clubs so they developed under different trajectories.

Annandale, falls church, and some of the other high schools in the area have kids who play for 4-5 different clubs. You are at a major disadvantage from the start before tryouts even start.

HS is really just about taking the best players who try out and getting the most out of them in those 3 months to win as many games as possible. It is NOT about longer term development beyond the current season.

When a mom came to me complaining why is her daughter not playing and eating bench thinking her chief position at pentagon was supposed to intimidate me I told her my job is to win games. Not develop her. Especially considering she didn’t even play club soccer.

Frankly, I don't care too much about development in HS. It's primary function is fun and personal growth. That's a good enough reason by itself.
If you have aspirations to play in college, you'll need a club environment to develop those skills and get the exposure needed.

in a 3-month season, you do not have time to correct each player's individual technical and tactical shortcomings to play a more advanced game and better quality style of play.

If you did, you would have to spend the whole season on individual development. Great for the players, bad for the win/loss record.

High school soccer is mostly measured by win/loss record, so coaches will gravitate towards strategies to win as much as possible - if they have to sacrifice long-term development and individual improvement, so be it, because they only have 3 months with the players and they may never coach you again, so if they screw up there is no accountability either.

No quality control either - what if the coach doesn't know what they are doing? there is no technical director or coaching director to oversee or correct anything.

My DD is a senior and her school has a serious shot at state championship. She’s already committed but I know it’d make her super happy to go start her collegiate career with a ring on it.

I know some players who have already committed are taking advantage of the online classes and finishing up HS a semester early to start training with their college team in the spring since NCAA plays in the fall. What club is she at?

Very few colleges are allowing early attendance until COVID gets sorted out. Most of the ACC is not really doing this.

Can you reorganize your thoughts? Not sure if you meant that the structure of HS soccer means simple soccer can or cannot be played. Halp!

THe lowest common denominator of soccer is played at HS because the structure does not allow for proper development of both players and a style of play.
