OP I have a similar palate and similar issue. I would love your cake and I have made sponges before. However, my dh and kids would not like it. They are strict American cake fans, preferably chocolate with store bought icing.

I would hate your cake. You lost me at the “soaked...” part. But I would absolutely love love some buttered popcorn, or even a brownie. Seriously, your cake sounds wonderful, but is that the kind of dessert that your family usually eats? It might be a know-your-audience issue. More for you though! I hope they at least appreciated your efforts!

I love a light sponge cake, but I don't think I'd care for the filling. If it were strawberries in a strawberry jam with some whipped cream, yes. Or a chocolate pastry cream in the middle with nothing outside and maybe a brush of rum syrup. Or cannoli filling.
I often just eat the entirety of things I make, so no judgement from me if you eat it all yourself!

Aw, thank you, everyone. You've made me feel better.

I made my family rich, buttery cakes and pastries with dollops of home-made whipped cream all through Christmas and thought we should have something festive but light this weekend.

Apparently they're still in artery-clogging mode...
