I really do not like this look at all, and I like a lot of various styles.

That photo is pretty washed out, perhaps deliberately, and makes it hard to really see detail.

LOL that plywood monstrosity is definitely not what I had in mind! The kitchens above are exactly the kind of photos I've been collecting. I'm just looking for a way to bring more natural and casual elements into it. Love the little corner seating area in that photo - I have a space just like that and was considering that, but I decided to use it for pantry space instead.

The semi-handmade fronts above are faced with textured melamine. I'm not sure if that's better or worse, but it's not plywood.

If the wood is sealed/good quality and nice grain it would be fine. Don't love it otherwise as I associate plywood with warping and being much heavier than it needs to be for cabinets (hard on the hardware).

That's my thought as well. as the wear and grease and discoloration shows up in specific areas.

It looks cheap like someone’s hunting cabin in the woods.

we have exposed-edge european plywood cabinets with a high-tech laminate front. when you look at it edge-on, the full-color laminate just sort of looks like another ply. a bunch of custom and semi-custom cabinetmakers like arclinea and henrybuilt have that as a design feature.

that said, furniture-grade european plywood is actually pretty expensive, and you'd need the highest grade to do a fully exposed panel, and you'd probably still have a lot of waste to avoid really obvious inclusions, and sealing the wood would take a lot of skill. a cleanable, matte laminate would probably work a lot better, or even a finished wood veneer that is less likely to yellow with sun exposure.
