Because it’s very uncommon and few of the sexless or miserable wives or husbands mention it- it seems pertinent.

Same with living together before marriage... most people do it and yet we see so many threads where the husband or wife either changed after marriage or after kids or became absorbed in his work and doesn’t act like a partner.

You don’t need to have sex or live together before marriage- you need flexibility and communication and commitment.


You didn’t need to, cool. Nothing is universal.

Does waiting until you're engaged count? DH and I were both virgins when we got engaged at 27. Neither of us is very high drive, neither of us was into casual sex, and we both had long hiatuses in our 20s between serious partners.

My SIL was (she and DH are from a very religious family. She was only 20 when they got married.

DH and I started having sex in high school, separated in undergrad, and came back together when he was in med school (married after living together for a year). We scandalized his family!

SIL is in a miserable marriage and DH and I are still very much in love after 18 years and three kids.

My sex drive is way too high for that. I didn’t get married until 30, and there’s no way I would have survived my 20s without getting laid. I’m crawling up the walls in frustration after a week of no sex, can’t imagine going 10+ years without it.

I’m 45 and also went to Catholic school for 12 years and don’t know anyone that was a virgin until marriage. Many of my classmates were virgins until college (compared to my friends who went to public and independent schools).

I sure didn’t. DH hadn’t had sex before marriage and our sex is way better than anything I got before marriage, probably because we are really comfortable around each other and we practice a lot. I don’t think my prior experience made a difference.
