Apply to private and public. See what you get in aid (merit and financial). Too many parents are instate only or state only and don’t realize privates will work with you.

A 1250 SAT is by definition above average. It's the 81st percentile. My kids all got in the 1200s and 1300s and all got into selective -- even highly selective -- colleges. You must have been lacking elsewhere if you "struggled."

lol at the idea that a 1300 is going to get you into a top 20 school. Probably not even top 30.

So how do we rectify this list of 80% acceptance rate schools, which actually would be match schools for the Op’s kid, with all the posters saying that the kid is well above average and can go anywhere? You honestly can’t do much better than these with those stats.

I'm not sure why you assume the people arguing that a literal national average is actually average are from out of town.

Perhaps we just attend schools and live in neighborhoods with people who are less privileged and slightly less educated than many DCUM posters?

I'm a high school magnet parent who is also a tenured professor who lives in a diverse local community. I think I can speak to what constitutes average high school performance, but if I can't, perhaps actually statistics can.
