Exactly. Not sure why our counselor kept telling us (unhooked) that we were at an advantage applying early. When we did our college tours, many admissions officers told us it wasn't an advantage to apply early. They never clarified why, but it became obvious after the fact that it was for the above reasons.

At our hs, we saw many great applicants get deferred early but then accepted in the regular round to top schools. I suspect part of it is to bump up the average GPA/test scores compared to the early admits so they can still look competitive for US News etc.

Plus some schools (Cornell, Duke and Penn. come to mind) require legacy applicants to apply ED for legacy to count as a “plus” on your application. So after accounting for legacy and athletes the ED admit rate for unhooked kids at many schools is probably no more than just slightly higher than the RD rate

Yes. It’s a fallacy to say that because the admit rate is twice as high during EA that a given kid has twice as a good a chance of getting in.
